Snow on the Coast

Two snow storms in a row...
shoveled out late in the day,
just in time to catch the sunset
on the coast.
Very cold!

Winter Solstice

Today on the winter solstice we had an unusual visitor
in our home.
(you can see her at the top of the photo in the center)
So unexpected for we live in Maine.
Here is a closer look...

Happy Winter Solstice and the return of more light.

PS.
A second after I posted the above butterfly around 3 o'clock
this afternoon, the power went off!
We had been in the midst of a dramatic rain and wind storm today
and
the power went off for 4 hours on the shortest and darkest day of the year!

To my surprise, when I looked out of the window between 4:30 and  5 pm.
I noticed light...
the rain had stopped and there was a glowing light on the horizon.

Prelude

'Twas the morning of the Christmas Prelude in
Kennebunkport as we followed
the Rockin Horse Stables Wagon
into town.

Wow, the town was packed with people and traffic...

It was snowing lightly throughout the day
as people strolled and shopped,
some wearing festive hats!

Away from the hubbub, it was so quiet...
a lobster boat could be seen coming in...

Brrr,

We rode over to Cape Porpoise and caught a glimpse
of the lighthouse as snow softly fell.

Autumn to Winter

In one week we have gone from autumn to winter...
I was just gathering the last of the fennel from
the garden only a week ago.

The crabapples and  autumn leaves
were still clinging
to the branches...

Yesterday storm clouds rolled in and the
sea was choppy...

This morning as I gazed through the
window there was snow.

At the beach the sea was wild!

The Day After the Storm

Although it was still dark when I woke this morning,
a light caught my eye through my dormer
window.
The full moon was setting and playing hide-n-seek
with the fast moving clouds.
To my surprise it was very calm and balmy outside.

We went out early to check out the surf at the beach...

The brightly colored rose hips were a lovely
contrast to the muted tones of the sea and sky.

In the shelter from the wind, there
was a calm sea but beyond the
lighthouse the strong surf could
be seen.

The sun even made an appearance.

Storm Sandy

The amazing storm has reached the coast of Maine.

Hope those in it's path stay safe.

Through the Mist

This was a special day that warmed our hearts.
Though it was a cold rainy day
the news of the birth of our grand niece
today that happened to also be our anniversary
made this day so memorable.

Colors of Autumn

Every time I walk by the birdbath along the path,
 I pause to take in
the reflection...

It seems that overnight the trees have
turned to beautiful autumn shades...

D has collected pears, when they ripen they are
very flavorful.

We have had a rainy, misty and drizzly week but
it can still be cozy and the colors beautiful.

Autumn

The first official day of autumn is here...

This evening the fog rolled in on the coast...

It was mysterious and beautiful...

We came to catch a glimpse of the elegant
Great White Herons as they
flew through the fog towards an island for the night.

Suddenly the fog lifted and the moon appeared
and the air was much cooler!

Wishing you a Happy Autumn Solstice!

Breezy

Saturday was just breezy enough to send colorful
kites sailing through the sky as a distant sailboat
enjoyed the same breezes.

Clear Evenings By the Sea

I love this time of year, though the days are shorter,
the quality of the light around sunset is so beautiful
and peaceful.

We love catching the sight of the shore birds
as they fly to the safety of Bumpkin Island
for the night just before sunset.
