Every morning we check the temperature outside
by opening the shade and looking at the rhododendrum.
This morning we are having a blizzard and the rhododendrum
leaves are curled up quite tightly which means it's very cold!
The tighter they are curled the colder it is, so when the
leaves are flat we know we are having a heat wave, not the
case today. Brrrrrr...

Hi Nan, I did know rhododendrum leaves were sensitive to the temps. I've been meaning to mount an outdoor thermometer outside the window but never get around to it.
Love your bird photos. They look great with the red berries supplying some color.
We got lucky this time and the snow missed us. Just a hundred miles north Milwaukee got 14-inches. I'm pretty tired of it. Bet you are too.

Me again, that should have read 'did not know' the leaves were sensitive to temperatures. My fingers surely go much faster than my brain.

Hi Marnie,
Oh, those rhododendrums are great for we don't have an outdoor thermometer.
This morning they were curled up so tightly, more than the other day.
The sun is shining so hopefully it will warm up!
Nan
Fantastic photo of the birds in the snow! Is that a hawthorn they're in? Nice bits of color against the snow. I've got a rhododendron, too...i don't know if it's a remainder of the house's original landscaping which only now is reasserting itself after years of being mowed down, or what. It's right up against the house's foundation..and it's leaves do the same curl thing! I didn't realize that was normal for rhododendrons to do, so am glad to hear about another one playing thermometer.
Beautiful pictures Nan. What kind of bird is above the nuthatch? I don't recognise it.
And when will the snow stop do you think?
quiltcat, Thanks for the comment...they are actually in a crabapple. Our rhododendrons are also
up against the front of our house.
They are quite an accurate thermometer especially when you don't have a real one!
sian, thanks also and the bird above the nuthatch is a Blue Jay.
Last year for some reason they were scarce in our yard but this year I've seen 8 of them together!
Do you have blue jays?
