Today was rainy and misty which continued into evening as we took a little ride. To our amazement, I spotted the black crowned night heron on a dock. As we got closer we discovered 4 or 5 herons were fishing in the same vicinity.
maybe a school of baitfish was swimming into the area? cool to see the little guy so out in the open instead of hiding in a marsh like they usually are!
Hi Nan, this is the first time I've seen this heron. He certainly doesn't look like the great blues we see in this area. In fact, I would never have guessed he belonged to the same species. Marnie
quiltcat, If you look closely in the 1st photo, you may be able to see 2 of the herons on the metal poles at the bottom of the photo. One pole is on a diagonal and the other is on the right. It was magical seeing them all fishing!
Marnie, Aren't they beautiful and they fish at night.
I'm an artist/illustrator specializing in ink and watercolors and photography. My little studio in Maine is nestled in our garden by a babbling brook. Everyday I draw inspiration from the pets who have touched my life, our garden, birds and wildlife critters, quaint old houses, children, shells, scenes of the seaside and more.
Hope to share my art and observations with you and don't forget to take a moment to notice the precious little things around you.
