I'm still in Connecticut and was talking
to my husband up in Maine.
They had torrential rain for 26 hours
and hurricane force winds that knocked the
power out in the middle of the night.
This morning, still no power.
He's going out to see if he can find out
what happened. Bet the surf is wild.
He may take a few photos that I will share
if he sends them to me.
Meanwhile, does anyone know about food
safety in the refrigerator and freezer during
and after a power outage.
( will search the internet, too)
Those of you in inclement weather,
I hope you are all safe and warm!

How very scary!
I think food is good in the freezer for 24 hours but you must not open it.
We used to get power cuts when it snowed, it is so miserable without electricity, you have my sympathy.
Hi acornmoon,
So very nice to hear from you and thanks for the info! I'm fortunate to still be visiting my Dad in Connecticut and the weather hasn't been too bad down here, just very light snow at the moment. My hubby and kitties in Maine with temperatures falling in the house. D said there's lots of debris around from the wind and the handicap ramp at the beach got torn off the wall and has been smashed and floated away.
Take care and I hope things are better in England!
So sorry to hear of all D and your kitties are going through. I had no idea the weather was so bad in Maine. It has been snowing for 2 days in NJ and schools have been closed. Finally ventured out for a bit today. I think life will be back to normal tomorrow. I also believe that 24 hours with the fridge door closed is right but I'm not 100% sure. I hope you found some info. on the internet. Hang in there! :)
I'm sorry to hear about the weather your husband and kitties are enduring! Having no power is pretty tough in the winter. I agree that 24 hours is the general rule on the refrigerator/freezer. However, if it's getting cold in the house, you may have a few more hours.
Our last extended power outage was in the summer when the humidity was high and the temperature was over 90 degrees. We were lucky to keep anything past 10 or 12 hours, even with the door on the refrigerator closed. Of course, we had just stocked the freezer!
Hi Lynne,
Good to hear from you! Talked to D tonight and the power came on as we spoke about 6:45 pm.! As soon as the heater went back on Ellie May sat in her wicker chair right in front of it!
Wow, you've really been getting a lot of snow! Are the boys enjoying it?
Take care!
Hi Willoughby,
Thanks for your concern and the info about the amount of time. I think that D said the temperature went up to 47 degrees in the refrigerator so he thinks some of the food should probably be thrown out for the power was out for over 18 hours. I guess the saying is, "when in doubt, throw it out". He had some frozen salmon in the freezer and ended up cooking it all outside on top of our old kerosun portable heater. Glad things are sort of back to normal there tonight. Whew, I am lucky to have missed this storm.
Hope all is well where you are!
