Visiting the Midcoast of Maine

Yesterday D and I decided to
take a ride north to discover new vistas.

Our first stop was Brunswick, Maine.
A lovely college town, home of Bowdoin College.
We admired the campus and the town on a leisurely
stroll on a warm day in autumn.

We continued north to Phippsburg... drove many miles
down a long wooded road with the intention of coming out
at Popham beach, but actually we
ended up in unfamiliar territory....what was on the other
side of the dune?
D went up the hill first...and he waved me onward!

...a magical spot called Head Beach!

How did we miss the turn to Popham Beach...
we headed back and eventually found the turn in the road.

Had a lovely walk on the beach...

It was getting late in the day as we drove into Bath.
(It reminded us both of a place we love, Marblehead.)
Loved the architecture, so much character...
hope to return when we have more daylight to wander
the streets and take in the vignettes with my camera.

As darkness descended, it was time to return
to our home in southern Maine, where
we were greeted by our family of cats who were
wondering where we were!

My cats always wonder why I would venture out and leave them ...

I love those old fashioned small towns. I often drive up into Wisconsin to visit little shops. For some reason Illinois has an agenda to demolish anything old and picturesque.

Does look familiar. My husband used to teach in that building but now he has another classroom with better acoustics and electronics. Easy to miss that left turn to Popham, but Head Beach is nice too as you show. Nice to reconnect with you!

jc, it was such a nice day...it's nice to get away for it gives you a new perspective on where you live.

marnie, I just love quaint old towns, it's so sad when they are destroyed.

Sarah Laurence, Good to reconnect with you, too! That turn to Popham even had us a bit confused on our way back when we were carefully looking for it!

ruthie, that was a coincidence and when we were actually in Bath, Maine my husband had mentioned something about Bath, England!

What a nice day the two of you had...thanks for sharing it! I spent a few days in Bath about 10 years ago and loved it...visited both Pelham beach and Popham beach, went to see harbor seals and saw puffins instead...and completely accidentally found out that Robbie O'Connell was playing at the Chocolate Church...what a great concert that was!
