Late Thursday night an ice storm hit Maine and other
New England states causing massive power outages.
It's Saturday afternoon and
our power just returned at 1:15 pm.
Last night the outdoor temperature dropped to 16 degrees
and the house temperature was 44 degrees this morning. Have
been wearing tons of layers to keep warm.
Am thankful to have the heat back and lights!
The full moon helped last night.
Here are some photos...
Woke up to this sight through the
upstairs window on Friday morning.
Ellie May was bundled up in jackets
and a scarf to keep warm as the temperature
dropped in the studio.
The sun actually came back in the
afternoon but the power didn't!
D found the old portable kerosene
heater that hadn't been used in many
years and managed to get it started
( it is fine for outdoor or very drafty
places). He actually heated up some
leftover potatoes on it!

Take care and stay warm :)

Hi Kim,
Oh, thanks for the good wishes!
I am so worn out from the cold, it's such a luxury to have the heat back and there will be lights tonight.
I hope that you are over the flu!
best wishes,
Nan
Hi Nan. I'm relieved to see your post! It must have been miserably cold in your house. It sounds like you need a pellet stove or wood stove or propane space heater....something small that doesn't require major construction but that can at least keep one room warm if your power goes out again. Did you bring all 3 cats into one room and tuck them under the covers with you?
Hi quiltcat,
Thanks for writing...I'm still exhausted from the cold and am trying to get ready for tomorrow's Breakfast with an Artist at the Nonantum. Santa and the Chocolatier will be there, also.
We heat with kerosene and unfortunately it has an electric start. What we need is a generator but they are too expensive and from what I've heard they are sold out everywhere. No batteries to be found either!
Thankfully the cats all managed to get through it. I would have loved to have them all in one room, but they don't get along with each other that way. They curled up in jackets and polar fleece in their separate quarters. We had quite an assortment of flashlights going. Now we have a better idea of what's important in an emergency.
Will write more soon and post photos.
take care,
Nan
I read about the terrible weather and thought of you and my other friends over there. Relieved to hear you all got through it relatively unscathed. Maybe a generator should be on Santa's list for next time?
Oh Yuk - I hate being cold and it hasn't got that cold in Wales for decades! Hope you are out of the worst of it now and are able to source some other emergency heat source soon.
Take care of yourself
Thanks everyone for your concern about the Ice Storm. It sure is disorienting. It's easy to take for granted heat, electricity and lights etc. and when you don't have those things everything takes longer, it's harder to think and your energy disappears just trying to stay warm. Missed being able to use the computer, too!
Going without power in the winter is one of my worst fears. I'm glad you have your electricity back.
Marnie
